    Exercise 3.6

    Adapted from: Smakman, (2014)

Parts from the “I have a dream” speech by American civil rights activist Martin Luther King 91929-19680; held on August 28, 1963, Washington, DC, United States, as found in Smakman (2014).

Listen to recording 3d and repeat. Some of the vowels that deserve your attention have been highlighted. Make sure these vowels are clearly short or equally long.

Practise a few times first and then record yourself.

Exchange recordings with a classmate one you are done and give each other feedback.

With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day. And this will be the day – this will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning. My country ‘tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing.

Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim’s pride; from every mountainside, let freedom ring!
