Exercise 4.2
Based on: Hermans, (2018)
Complete this exercise on your own. Go back to the list of words from exercise 4.1 and record yourself reading out all the words, when paying attention to the difference in vowels you have written down in your Pronunciation Portfolio during the previous exercise.
Once you are done, listen back to your recording to find out if you have made a clear difference in vowel production. This means that there has to be an actual difference between both vowels.
1. bad – bed 6. pat – pet
2. sad – said 7. pan – pen
3. bat – bet 8. mat – met
4. shall – shell 9. band – bend
5. dad – dead 10. man – men
Exercise 4.3
Based on: Hermans, (2018)
Listen to recording 4a reading out the list of words from exercise 4.1 and write down in your Pronunciation Portfolio the difference that you hear between the vowel in the first and second word of each word pair. Is this difference similar to the difference you and your classmate identified? Try to describe the difference that you hear as accurately as possible.
Once you are done, watch the instruction video on the next page.
