Exercise 6.1
Adapted from: Duberman, (2016)
The list of words below, which you might recognise from the previous lesson, contains examples of words that have either ‘voiceless’ or ‘voiced’ /th/ at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end.
Copy-paste all words into your Pronunciation Portfolio and highlight all ‘voiced’ examples in red.

Beginning: middle: end:
this other with
that mother path
these brother bath
those either moth
think rather both
thing gather cloth
three something sloth
thank anything death
Thursday nothing math
throw although wrath

Exercise 6.2
Listen to recording 6a, which pronounces all the words from exercise 6.1 that contain the ‘voiced’ /th/ sound and check whether you have highlighted the correct /th/s in red.
Make corrections in your Pronunciation Portfolio where necessary.

Exercise 6.3
Adapted from: Hermans, (2018)
Go back to the list of words from exercise 6.2 again. Watch the video to take a close look at how your teacher moves the tip of his tongue between his teeth when pronouncing ‘voiced’ /th/.
Listen to every word and copy what you hear as closely as possible. Record yourself while doing this. Then, listen back to your recording for improvements. It might help you if you hold on to the /th/ sound a little longer, so that you can feel the vibration. If you don’t feel any vibration, you are not doing it correctly, which means you will have to practise some more until you are able to feel the necessary vibration in your throat.
