    Tip box:

As you might have noticed when you were trying it out, the Dutch /r/ is produced as a rolling sound, which creates a little trill. You can either do this as a punt-r by letting the tip of your tongue touch the alveolar ridge (tandkassen), or by producing a trill further down in your throat (huig-r). The /r/ that you produce depends on where in the Netherlands you’re from. In Dutch, we also pronounce an /r/ whenever it occurs in a word. Let’s try it out by reading aloud a few Dutch words: ‘grom, beter, donder, meter, vader, etc’. Do you hear any /r/s?

    & linking /r/

    Introduction

Think of how we pronounce the /r/ in Dutch and read the sentence below aloud:

My father drives a red Ferrari car.

Now, listen to recording 1a. Do you hear a difference between how you pronounced the /r/ according to the Dutch example and how the /r/ is pronounced in RP?

Listen again if you could not immediately hear it, until you have heard a difference.

Write down in your Pronunciation Portfolio what you have heard.

After you have done this, play the video and find out what the difference is.
